Burniston fracking controversy
The proposed exploratory drilling in Burniston by Europa is for a conventional low volume hydraulic fracturing operation. Europa intend to submit their planning application before the end of November. There are many reasons to oppose the plans, not least of which is the environmental impact of extracting and burning fossil fuels along with the impact on the environment and wildlife. Drilling would also cause noise and light pollution from the construction and 24/7 operation of the drilling facility, the impact of increased HGV traffic on village roads, associated storage issues. The location of the site is close to residential houses and between the Cycle Network and the Cleveland Way amongst many other concerns. Fracking is controversial, has problematic wastewater disposal issues and can be associated with potential earthquakes. Fracking also requires injecting large volumes of water, that can become contaminated and affect local soil and water supplies. The potential contamination of waterways like Burniston Beck and Scalby Beck is very concerning.
If you want to know more or want to voice your concerns / opposition you are invited to attend a drop in session arranged by Europa at Burniston and Cloughton Village Hall on Thursday 26-9-24 between 1-6pm

Bridge over Scalby Beck will go ahead
A 200 home development at High Mill was granted planning permission in 2020 which included plans for a bridge over Scalby Beck. The bridge was intended to provide a link from the estate to schools, doctors surgeries and shops etc.
A recent request by the developer to forego the building of the bridge was rejected by the Scarborough and Whitby area planning Committee.
More antisocial behaviour problems on Scalby Beck
There has been a history of conflict around the unofficial bike track on Scalby Beck which has gone on for decades and appears to be no nearer a resolution.

Councillor Grieve said he was aware of “conflicting views regarding the use of the site by bikers” and added that there was both a “degree of nuisance being caused” as well as “a facility that has been created by and is no doubt providing enjoyment to a group of local bikers and young people”.

Bellway Homes
There is controversy concerning Bellway Homes building a potential bridge over Scalby Beck.
There is a proposal that there is to be a variation of condition 3 and removal of condition 18 on decision 19/01248/OL dated 03.09.2020 to delete requirement for pedestrian/cycle bridge/route over Sea Cut/Scalby Beck.
This has generated some controversy with some suggesting that Bellway Homes are seeking to renege on what was previously agreed.
To comment or object go to the proposal online at Scarborough Borough Council Planning Portal. The reference for this case is 22/01928/OLA.
Comments and objections must be logged no later than 26th October.
